คำ article แบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 ชนิด คือ
A. Indefinite Article ได้แก่ a, an (ใช้กับคำนามนับได้ที่ไม่เจาะจง)
B. Definite Article ได้แก่ the (ใช้กับคำนามนับได้ที่เจาะจง)

1. ใช้ an นำหน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ a,
e, i, o,u หรือออกเสียงสระไม่ว่าจะเขียนขึ้นต้น
ด้วยพยัญชนะก็ตามเช่น an elephant, an hour, an umbrella, an apple 2. ใช้ a, an นำหน้าคำนามเอกพจน์ที่นับได้เสมอที่มีความหมายเป็น"หนึ่ง" She has a dog. Give me an apple. This is a durian.
3. ใช้ a, an นำหน้าคำที่บอกอาชีพ
I am a student . I want to be a teacher. 4. ใช้ a, an นำหน้านามเอกพจน์ที่แปลเป็นต่อ...(หน่วย)

5. ใช้ a กับการเจ็บไข้ได้ป่วยเช่น

1. ใช้กับคำนามนับได้เอกพจน์และพหูพจน์ที่เป็นการชี้เฉพาะเจาะจงลงไปว่าคนไหน อันไหน สิ่งไหน
2. ใช้ the นำหน้าคำนามที่มีสิ่งเดียว

3. ใช้ the นำหน้าชื่อครอบครัวเช่น

4. ตามปกติเราใช้ the นำหน้าชื่อหนังสือพิมพ์เช่น
